Write, Ship, Repeat

Stop over-engineering every word

Just Write Something

There is an online writing epidemic, and everyone falls into one of two buckets.

  1. The writing is over-engineered, quadruple proofread, and so compulsively crafted that it’s lost all humanity and personality

  2. The exact opposite where the reader is left wondering why they even bothered engaging in the words in the first place

Por que no los dos?

I write — a lot. And I rarely have even the slightest clue what I’m going to say next. I post on LinkedIn, Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, all over communities, in beehiiv newsletters, and everything in between.

People who are always chasing “going viral” will miss out on countless opportunities to say something at all, and those people also underestimate the value in what they have to say if they just post something, then ship it.

Between Twitter and LinkedIn, I’ve probably posted ~30,000 times in the last few years. I usually spend anywhere between 15-60 seconds on a post from concept to publish. Obviously there are exceptions, and there are times I spent a good 15 minutes on a post.

But those are definitely exceptions.

Why does it matter? Who cares if I write online?

Everyone should learn how to write.

It helps in personal life, professional life, career trajectory, and upleveling skills. And in extreme examples, people are losing everything they’ve ever worked toward on a social platform, and knowing how to write effectively is an infinite buffer should you ever need to start over.

Here’s one horrific example of countless.

@veryveryvinny

This sucks. @Facebook

No way around it: this sucks. Working toward something and losing it all is terrible. This type of thing happens every day to countless creators, and with the potential countrywide ban of TikTok coming soon, learning to write and owning your audience with a newsletter will be more important than ever.

Here’s my encouragement to you.

Write something — anything — and publish it today. Don’t overthink it. Don’t over-engineer it. Just say something and publish it.

Then do it again tomorrow.

And again the next day.

There is a world of opportunity that you’re not touching by holding back.

Bonus points: write a newsletter, own your audience, fool proof your creator landscape so that you can’t lose everything.

The best way to create excellent content is to consume great content. Here are some of the best content verticals that everyone should be consuming right now.

  1. Big Desk Energy. Written by the one and only Tyler Denk, the content is impactful, actionable, and incredibly engaging to read. Whenever someone asks me for newsletter or design recommendations, I immediately point them to BDE. I read every issue, and I think you should do.

  2. Creator Spotlight. This used to be a newsletter specifically about beehiiv creators. In the last few months it’s transformed to become the number one newsletter about content creators anywhere. It might be about newsletters, or Tiktok, or YouTube, beehiiv or otherwise. A must-read for any aspiring content creators looking to inspiration from the internet’s best and brightest.

  3. The Reeder. I know Devin Reed and he’s awesome. He was the Head of Content at Gong for a long time, and is now the Head of Content at Clari. He’s a top creator, especially on LinkedIn, but also with his newsletter. Check him out and follow his upcoming video content series on LinkedIn as well.

Until next time,
