Question from a Reader

If you didn’t know, I ask every new subscriber a few questions

How do I start a newsletter if I have no existing social presence?

That’s a question that came in just a few days ago from a new Fatherpreneur subscriber, and here’s what I would do if I were starting a newsletter without any existing audience whatsoever.

Nail Down Your “Why”

Before diving into tactics, be clear about why you're starting this newsletter. It should resonate with your passions and interests, but more importantly, with what you can bring to your audience that they can't get elsewhere. Your "why" will fuel you when the growth feels slow and help shape the voice and direction of your content.

  • Clarify Your Message: Write a one-liner about your newsletter's mission. For example, "A weekly boost of productivity tips for busy dads balancing work and family."

  • Create Reader Personas: Think of 2-3 ideal readers. What are their pain points, interests, and goals? Tailoring content to these personas will make your newsletter resonate more deeply.

Define a Niche, But Stay Authentic

While picking a niche is often advised, don’t get too hung up on being ultra-specific. Think broad enough to pivot but specific enough to speak directly to a core group of people who will find value in your insights. Be yourself, be honest, and write from your experiences. Authenticity will draw people in when you don't have a huge platform.
