How to Split Your Time to Accomplish More

Writing a newsletter requires a lot of competing priorities... Here's how to organize them all.

Hey there, Fatherpreneurs —

In today’s newsletter we answer another question from one of the readers. 👇️

“How should I prioritize my time when starting out, in terms of percentages allocated to writing vs. promoting (for example)?”

This is an excellent question.

Let’s dive in.

By the way, I’m currently implementing the strategies I write about in Fatherpreneur in two of my other newsletters: The Daily Fact  my daily email of random facts that will make you smarter and impress your wife — and Running, a personal journey about my recent transformation from couch potato to fitness influencer and aspiring marathon runner.

Now, let’s get into the meat of this thing.

The Art of Prioritizing: How to Split Your Time Between Writing and Promoting

I get it – when you're just getting started, figuring out where to put your energy can feel like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Do you double down on writing? Do you hustle on promotion? Do you break into a sweat just thinking about it?

Good news: there’s a method to the madness.

The 70/30 Rule (But It’s Not Set in Stone)

When you’re just launching, I recommend starting with a 70/30 split – where 70% of your time goes to creating and 30% to promoting. Why? Because at this stage, the core focus should be on building a body of work you’re proud of, something that feels like you and gives value to your audience. No amount of promotion can sell content that’s not there yet.

Here’s how that might look if you have 10 hours a week:

  • 7 hours: Writing, editing, polishing, making your content scroll-stoppingly good.

  • 3 hours: Sharing, cross-promoting, and getting that content into the hands (and feeds) of the right people.

But Don’t Ignore the Promotion Game

Promotion is like the wings to your writing; without it, your words just won’t fly. So, as your content base grows (say, after a month or two of consistent posting), consider gradually shifting to a 60/40 or even 50/50 split. At that point, you’ll have a solid stash of content ready to shine, so your time is better spent making sure it actually gets seen.

Streamline your PR without sacrificing quality.

With Pressmaster.ai, you can schedule, create and distribute your content to top magazines, social media and email lists with just a few clicks.

PR doesn't have to be expensive or complicated. Not anymore.

Skip the hassle and get your own PR ninja at your fingertips:

Why Not 100% Writing? Or 100% Promotion?

Going all-in on writing without promotion means you’re a legend in a cave – creating masterpieces no one’s seeing. On the flip side, going 100% promotion without quality content will burn your credibility faster than your subscribers can unsubscribe.

It's the balance that builds.

Final Tips for Keeping Sane:

  1. Batch Your Work: Try setting aside dedicated blocks for writing and promoting so that you're not bouncing back and forth. Focus = productivity.

  2. Measure and Adjust: Track what actually works in promotion – is it your social posts, collaborations, email blasts? Lean into the channels giving you traction.

  3. Listen to Feedback: As your audience grows, let their feedback refine your content. The best kind of promotion is delivering exactly what people need.

Not everyone is as lucky as me, but my wife is incredible and makes writing our local newsletter a total and complete joy. I write and operate 5 newsletters, and our local newsletter is by far the most put together.

That’s because of my wife.

If you have a partner who you can imagine helping you with your newsletter, don’t feel like you have to do it all by yourself.
