3 Ways Discipline Can Help You Write Better
I admit it... life's been hectic
Hey guys!
I guess a hectic life isn’t a perfectly good excuse for not writing my newsletter but it’s the one I'm using.
Between me, my wife, and my son Everett being sick a ton this year, beehiiv growing at the absolute speed of light, and our involvement with the community we live in (plus summer travel), my weekly newsletter was honestly one of the first things to go.
Anyway, I’m back, I’m still alive, and I’m talking to more newsletter operators every week than I ever have before. Operators big, small, and in between. Operators absolutely thrilled about what we’re building at beehiiv and ecstatic to join the parade.
So much has happened in the last few months. This tweet (post?) does a pretty good roundup of what’s been going on at work.
The old way to write a newsletter:
- writer's block
- takes hours
- spelling mistakes
- only one language
- boring tone of voice
- costs way too much moneyThe new way to write a newsletter:

Plus, I wanted to remind you that earning life-changing income from a premium newsletter has never been easier. Really. If you start now, you could be earning 6-figures by this time next year.
2,000 subscribers paying $5 per month for your newsletter is a comfortable 6-figure salary.

My Weekly Newsletter Suggestion
Alex is someone I’ve followed for a few years on Twitter, and a lifelong learner I deeply admire and respect.
The one tweet he wrote that I’ve come back to countless time was this one from nearly 2 years ago.
If you’re overthinking, write.
If you’re underthinking, read.

3 Ways Discipline Can Help You Write Better
I’m preaching to the choir here, so this is as much for me as it is for you, reader.
Maintaining discipline and consistency in writing and publishing a newsletter, especially when life gets hectic, can be challenging but is crucial for building an engaged readership. Here are three strategies to help you stay disciplined:
Create a Content Calendar:
Develop a content calendar that outlines your publication schedule for the newsletter. Specify the topics or themes for each edition in advance. This provides structure and ensures you always have a clear direction for your writing.
Allocate dedicated time slots in your calendar for newsletter research, writing, and editing. Treat these appointments as non-negotiable commitments.
Batch Your Tasks:
Batch similar tasks together to maximize efficiency. For instance, allocate one day each week for content research and another day for writing and editing.
When you research, gather content for multiple editions at once. This way, even if you're busy on certain days, you'll have a backlog of material to work with.
Delegate and Automate:
Consider delegating certain tasks if possible. If you have a team or can hire assistance, delegate research or administrative tasks to free up more of your time for writing. beehiiv’s collaborative editor makes writing your newsletter with a team easier than ever.
Automate your newsletter distribution. Use email marketing platforms that allow you to schedule newsletters in advance. This way, even during busy periods, your subscribers will still receive newsletters as scheduled.
Bonus Tips:
Set realistic goals: Ensure that your publication schedule aligns with your capacity. It's better to publish consistently at a slightly slower pace than to promise more than you can deliver. I’ve talked with dozens of creators that say “I want to start writing a daily newsletter.” My first question to them is always, “Have you ever written a newsletter before?” Sometimes starting with daily isn’t realistic. Start with weekly, and then start publishing more frequently.
Use productivity techniques: Techniques like the Pomodoro Technique (working in focused 25-minute intervals) can help you stay on track during writing sessions.
Prioritize self-care: Maintaining discipline is essential, but don't neglect your well-being. Proper sleep, nutrition, and regular breaks are vital for sustained productivity.
Discipline is about forming habits, and it may take some time to establish a routine. Be patient with yourself, and make adjustments as needed to adapt to life's unpredictabilities while continuing to publish your newsletter regularly.
